FLORENCE, S.C. − Shannon Singleton-Bates scored a career-high 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field to help lead No. 17 (
USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25) Francis Marion University to a 97-63 victory over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference East Division women’s basketball Saturday afternoon at the Smith University Center.
The Patriots won their fifth game in a row and improved to 15-2 overall and 7-1 in the Peach Belt. The Saints lost their fourth game in a row and fell to 6-9 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Singleton-Bates also made 7-of-9 from the free throw line and grabbed five rebounds and collected four steals. Precious Tucker added 15 points, seven rebounds, five steals and two blocks while Robin Colbert chipped in with 11 points, a game-high seven assists, a game-high six steals and six rebounds.
Francis Marion out-scored Flagler 60-26 in the paint and also forced a season-high 38 turnovers by the Saints which led to 38 Patriot points. FMU also scored 29 points in transition.
Chanti Beckett (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield HS) scored a team-high 11 points for Flagler. She made 9-of-14 from the free throw line.
Jalisa Foster (St. Petersburg, Fla./Pinellas Park HS) added 10 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Flagler shot 51.7% (14-27) in the second half.
After a
Jen Mitchell (Fort Myers, Fla./Cypress Creek HS) 10-foot jumper put Flagler to within a basket (18-16) with 9:59 left in the half, Francis Marion closed the went on a 19-4 run which was part of an overall 25-9 spurt to close the half with a 43-25 lead. In the 19-4 run, the Patriots made 7-of-11 from the field while the Saints went 0-for-9 from the field with five turnovers.
Flagler returns home to meet Georgia College & State University on Monday (Jan. 25) at 5:30 p.m. at Flagler Gym.
