Clayton State holds off Flagler, 88-80

MORROW, Ga. − The Clayton State University men’s basketball team weathered a 24-14 run by Flagler College late in the second half to hold on for an 88-80 Peach Belt Conference win Saturday afternoon at the Athletics & Fitness Center.

The Lakers improved to 11-8 overall and 4-5 in conference play while Flagler lost its fifth in a row and fell to 7-11 overall and 2-7 in league action.

Robert Murry hit a jumper with 11:43 remaining in the game to give Clayton State its largest lead of the game - 19 points (69-50). Flagler would answer by going on a 24-14 run over the next 10:41 with John Pietkiewicz (Winter Park, Fla./New Hampton (N.H.) Prep) sinking a three-pointer with 1:02 left in the game to cap the run and put the Saints to within seven points (81-74). Flagler could not draw any closer.

Murry finished with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field for the Lakers. Brandon Robinson added 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots while Torrin Greene came off the bench to supply 10 points. Timothy Downs chipped in with nine points and dished out a game-high seven assists.

Clayton State out-scored Flagler 34-18 in the paint and converted 14 Flagler miscues into 17 points. The Lakers shot 56.7% (17-30) from the field in the first half and held a 52-37 lead the half. They shot 51.6% (32-62) from the field for the game.

D.J. Ferguson (Orlando, Fla./Bishop Moore HS) scored a team-high 19 points and handed out six assists. Pietkiewicz added 18 points while Eddie Fowler (Deltona, Fla./Pasco-Hernando CC) recorded his first double-double with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Saints grabbed 19 offensive rebounds which led to 22 second chance points. Flagler shot 37.9% (25-66) from the field, the fourth-straight game the Saints have shot less than 40%, but the highest in that span. Flagler made 10 three-pointer, the most this season since they made 11 against Trinity (Fla.) on Jan. 18.

Flagler will head to Savannah on Feb. 3 to take on Armstrong Atlantic in another Peach Belt Conference game at 7:30 p.m.
