ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − All-American Ben Madgen scored a game-high 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field to help power No. 5 (NABC/Division II Top 25) Augusta State University to an 85-62 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference East Division men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Flagler Gym.

Augusta State won its eighth game in a row and improved to 23-2 overall and 15-1 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 9-15 overall and 4-11 in conference play.

Madgen scored 17 of his 28 points in the second half alone and made 6-of-7 from the field. Fred Brathwaite recorded a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds while Alex Smith tacked on 12 points. Daniel Dixon and Greg Hire each tallied six assists.

The Jaguars shot 52.6% (30-57) from the field for the game and shot 64% (16-25) in the second half.

Eddie Fowler (Deltona, Fla./Pasco-Hernando CC) led the Saints with 15 points on 6-of-112 shooting from the field. Chad July (Fort White, Fla./Bridgton (Maine) Academy) tallied 11 points, nine of which came in the second half before fouling out with 3:42 to go. D.J. Ferguson (Orlando, Fla./Bishop Moore HS) dished out 11 assists while Justin Stokes (Jacksonville, Fla./Florida Gulf Coast U.) grabbed a career-high eight rebounds.

The game was close for much of the first half, featuring four ties and 15 lead changes, but a 16-6 run by the Jaguars to close the half gave Augusta State a 39-30 lead going into the break.

A smaller 14-5 run early in the second half pushed the ASU lead to 18 (57-39) with 11:18 left.

Flagler will travel to Greenwood, S.C., on Saturday to take on Lander University which will be an important game as four teams are vying for the fourth and final playoff spot in the East Division. Lander leads three teams, including Flagler, by one game, for fourth place with three games remaining.
