Bees top Saints, 6-3, in season opener

Travis Coverston singled twice and scored a run in Flagler's 6-3 season opening loss at SCAD Wednesday afternoon.

SAVANNAH, Ga. − Michael Imbriale (1-0) tossed seven and two-thirds innings, scattered 10 hits, allowed three runs and struck out six as the Savannah College of Art and Design defeated Flagler College 6-3 Wednesday afternoon at Grayson Stadium.

SCAD picks up its first win of the season after losing all three games at Point Loma Nazarene University last weekend. Flagler fell in its season opener.

Mick Waterhouse pitched the last inning and one-third to earn the save.

The Bees plated the first run of the game when Will Cioffi singled home Chris Emrey from second base.

SCAD broke open the game with a three-run fifth inning. Patrick Braswell had an RBI single, another run scored on a wild pitch and Kyle DeYoung doubled home Braswell.

The Bees scored another run in the seventh before the Saints plated three in the top of the eighth and cut the deficit to 5-3. Travis Coverston (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) led off the inning with a base hit. He advanced to second on a grounder and took third on Cale Owen’s (Clearwater, Fla./home school) double to right. Jose Rohena (Tampa, Fla./St. Petersburg College) cleared the bases with a single and later scored on a bases loaded walk.

SCAD added a run in the bottom of eighth.

Braswell, DeYoung and Emrey each collected two hits for the Bees.

Dagmar Pena (Jacksonville, Fla./University of Tampa) and Coverston each singled twice for the Saints.

Gary Lohmann (Ormond Beach, Fla./Seabreeze HS) (0-1) went four and two-thirds innings and allowed five hits and four runs.

Flagler opens at home on Friday at 3 p.m. against Limestone College and then at 6:30 p.m. against the University of Alabama-Huntsville at Flagler Stadium.

AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Zach Bove (Winter Haven, Fla./Central Florida CC) went 4-for-7 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and six runs batted in to help lead Flagler College to a doubleheader sweep of Augusta State University in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams at Flagler Stadium. Flagler won the opener 6-4 and triumphed 14-5 in the nightcap.
