Flagler men fall at Armstrong Atlantic, 76-65

SAVANNAH, Ga. − A 12-2 run early in the second half broke a 41-all tie and Armstrong Atlantic State University defeated Flagler College 76-65 in a Peach Belt Conference East Division men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Alumni Arena.

Armstrong Atlantic won its second consecutive game and improved to 7-13 overall and 2-9 in conference action. Flagler lost its sixth-straight game and is now 7-12 overall and 2-8 in the league.

Gabriel Robinson led the Pirates with 16 points and six assists while Chris Vanlandingham added 13 points. Patrick Shopkepa contributed 12 points and seven rebounds. Keron McKenzie tacked on 11 points and seven rebounds.

John Pietkiewicz (Winter Park, Fla./New Hampton (N.H.) Prep) tallied a game-high 21 points, 15 of which came in the first half. He made 5-of-10 from the field in the first half including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Pietkiewicz went 7-for-16 from the field and 5-10 from three-point range in the game. He also dished out a game-high eight assists. Eddie Fowler (Deltona, Fla./Pasco-Hernando CC) added 12 points. D.J. Ferguson (Orlando, Fla./Bishop Moore HS) tallied nine points and seven assists. Adam Dixon (Victoria, Australia/Lilydale HS) came off the bench to provide eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.

The Saints were held to 37.5% (12-32) shooting from the floor in the second half.

The game featured 10 ties and eight lead changes including eight ties and seven lead changes in the first half.

No team had a lead larger than five points in the first half and a Robinson jumper at the buzzer tied the game at 35 at the half.

In the second half, a pair of layups by Flagler’s Kenny Moore (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach HS) and Fowler knotted the game at 41 with 16:46 left to go and a McKenzie three-pointer sparked the deciding 12-2 run by Armstrong Atlantic. The Saints could only pull to within seven points for the remainder of the game.

Flagler hosts UNC Pembroke on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Flagler Gym.
