ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − The Flagler College Saints baseball team split a pair of games in the Flagler Challenge in its home opener Saturday afternoon at Flagler Stadium. Flagler opened with a 9-7 win over the University of Alabama-Huntsville and then dropped the second game, 11-2, to Limestone College.
Flagler is now 1-2 on the season while Alabama-Huntsville wrapped up the day with a 1-1 record after out-slugging Limestone 9-8 in the nightcap. Limestone is also 1-1.
In the first game of the day,
Dagmar Pena (Jacksonville, Fla./University of Tampa) went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and also drove in a run to lead the Saints.
Travis Coverston (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while
Zach Bove (Winter Haven, Fla./Central Florida CC) doubled, homered, scored a run and drove in four more.
Cale Owen (Clearwater, Fla./home schooled) singled, tripled and scored twice.
Jonathan Armold (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest School) (1-0) went five innings, scattered seven hits and allowed three runs to earn Flagler’s first win of the season.
The Saints rallied from a 3-2 deficit with a three-run third inning on the strength of Bove’s three-run home run. Flagler added single tallies in the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings.
Ryan McCrory went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and collected three RBI for the Chargers. Jerome Dunning singled twice and drove in two runs. Corey Whittle and Jordan Parker each singled twice and scored twice. Chase Earl (0-1) tossed three and one-third innings and allowed eights hits and six earned runs.

In the second game, Limestone erupted for four runs in the first inning and didn’t look back in an 11-2 win over Flagler.
Joe Maloney went 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs scored and five RBI for Limestone. Drew Lydon went 3-for-5 with a double, home run, three runs scored and another two driven in. Drew Hughey doubled twice and drove in two runs.
Brock White (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing five innings and allowing just one hit while fanning five.
Lydon provided an RBI double in the first and Maloney added a two-run double in the same frame.
Payne Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) led Flagler by going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Johnny Gaines (Jacksonville, Fla./Hillsborough CC) (0-1) went five innings, allowed eight hits and seven earned runs.

In the last game of the day, Alabama-Huntsville got a rare sacrifice fly to the second baseman which pated the go ahead run in the bottom of the eighth and then Limestone left the bases loaded in the ninth in the 9-8 UAH win.
Flagler will host Alabama-Huntsville at 2 p.m. on Sunday. UAH and Limestone meet at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
