ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − No. 6 (NFCA Division II) Valdosta State University rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Flagler College Sunday afternoon at a chilly Saints Field. Valdosta State took the opener 11-1 and followed with a 10-1 victory.

The two games were the season openers for both teams. Flagler and Valdosta State were to meet at the Georgia Southwestern Invitational this weekend, but inclement weather cancelled the tournament. Both teams were scheduled to meet on Feb. 28 in St. Augustine, but decided to move the game to today.

In the opener, the Lady Blazers scored 10 runs in the last two innings to secure the win. VSU pounded out 12 hits and belted three home runs.

Holly Satterfield (1-0) went the distance and scattered four hits and gave up an unearned run.

Marti Littlefield was a triple shy of the cycle and collected two runs batted in. Courtney Merritt hit a three-run homer in the sixth and finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.

Brittney Hatem (Hialeah, Fla./Wallace-Dothan CC) singled three times and drove in Flagler’s lone run. Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla./Central Florida CC) (0-1) tossed five and one-third innings, allowed four hits, five earned runs and struck out eight.
