Saints rustle up two wins over Vaqueros

Nate Fudala had a big night going 5-for-7 with three doubles, five runs scored and collected three RBI in Flagler's doubleheader sweep of P.R.-Bayamon Thursday night.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Flagler College hammered out 30 hits, scored 32 runs and had 11 extra-base hits in a doubleheader sweep of the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon Thursday night at Flagler Stadium. The Saints won the opener 13-1 and then took the second game 19-3.

Flagler improved its record to 10-7. P.R.-Bayamon is an independent member of NCAA Division II.

In the opener, the Saints spotted the Vaqueros a run in the first inning, tied it in the second and then erupted for a five-run third.

Jose Rohena (Tampa, Fla./St. Petersburg College) led off the third inning with a walk and Zach Bove (Winter Haven, Fla./Central Florida CC) followed with a single. John Sgromolo (Fleming Island, Fla./Clay HS) singled in Rohena which proved to be the game winning hit. After a wild pitch moved the runners up, and an out was recorded, Payne Maddox (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) hit a two-run single and later scored on an RBI-single by Nate Fudala (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin HS). Jarrod Simmons (Jacksonville, Fla./Central Florida CC) capped the inning by tripling home Fudala.

The Saints added seven more in the home half of the sixth inning, highlighted by Charlie Stewart’s (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) two-run double.

Fudala went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and collected two runs batted in. Sgromolo singled three times, scored twice and drove in a run. Maddox went 2-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and three RBI while Simmons singled, tripled and drove in two runs for the Saints.

Adam Jaudon (St. Augustine, Fla./Pedro Menendez HS) (3-0) tossed a complete game six-hitter, allowed an unearned run and fanned six. He tossed 74 pitches, 52 went for strikes.

Javier Marrero went 3-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Vaqueros. Jean Carlos Velez took the loss after hurling five innings and allowing nine hits, five earned runs, but did strike out six batters.

In the second game, Flagler wasted little time jumping on UPRB, scoring twice in the first, adding another in the second and three more in the third en route to a 19-3 triumph.

Seven errors by the Vaqueros led to 13 unearned runs by the Saints.

Sgromolo hit an RBI-double in the bottom of the first and later scored in an error. Fudala put the Saints ahead 3-0 when he singled home K.C. McCarthy (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle Regional HS) in the second.

Cade Smith (Ocala, Fla./North Marion HS) belted a two-run homer to left-center in Flagler’s three-run third.

Ahead 7-2 going into the bottom of the fifth, Flagler erupted for eight runs.

Justin McKenna (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Allen D. Nease HS) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and collected four RBI. Smith went 3-for-5 with the home run, a run scored and three more driven in. Ollie Bertrand (Sainte-Adèle, Quebec/Monroe CC) singled twice, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Tyler Vanover (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Providence HS) tripled, scored three times and collected two RBI.

Tim Lappin (Jacksonville, Fla./Paxon HS) (1-1) picked up his first collegiate win after tossing five innings, scattering six hits and allowing two runs while fanning four.

Marrero singled, doubled, scored a run and drove in two for the Vaqueros. Rodrigo Matta singled twice and scored a run.

Jose Rivera took the loss on the hill after going four and one-third innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs.

Flagler hosts 24th-ranked (NAIA) Saint Xavier University of Chicago tomorrow (Mar. 5) at 4 p.m.
