ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – No. 12 (ITA Division II) Northwood (Mich.) University went down to the wire to defeat No. 16 Flagler College 5-4 in a non-conference men’s tennis match Saturday afternoon at the Flagler Tennis Center.
Northwood snapped a three-match losing streak to improve to 2-3. Flagler lost its third in a row and fell to 7-3.
Harry Snoxell (Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Prep) and
Tim Hansson defeated Marcus Oliveira and Michael Haas, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles for Flagler’s lone points in doubles play.
The tide turned in singles play as sixth-ranked
David Cotrone (Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Christian) defeated the third ranked player he has seen in as many matches in No. 36 Peter Kazianschuetz 6-3 and 6-4. Snoxell rolled past Oliveira 6-3 and 6-1 at No. 3 singles while
Peter Coulis (Bradenton, Fla./Edison Academic Center) had little trouble beating Julian Freese 6-1 and 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
The match came down to the winner of the No. 5 flight between Tim Hansson and Max Dutios. Dutios came away with a hard-fought 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win which won the match for the Timberwolves.
Flagler returns to Peach Belt Conference play on Sunday (Mar. 7) against 11th-ranked Georgia College & State University at 12:30 p.m. at the Flagler Tennis Center. This will be Flagler’s fourth consecutive match playing a top 15 opponent.
