Flagler softball sweeps No. 24 USC Aiken

Kaley King doubled twice, hit a home run and collected four RBI to help lead Flagler to a doubleheader sweep of No. 24 USC Aiken Sunday afternoon.

AIKEN, S.C. − Flagler College played its first Peach Belt Conference softball games and the swept a doubleheader at No. 24 (NFCA Division II Top 25) USC Aiken 6-0 and 6-3 Sunday afternoon at J.H. Satcher Field.

Flagler extended its winning streak to four games and improved to 13-11 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt. USC Aiken lost its third consecutive game and fell to 12-8 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

In the opener, Kelly Riddick (Hampton, Fla./Central Florida CC) (8-7) shined in the circle by tossing six shutout innings, scattering four hits, fanning eight and getting another eight batters to fly out. Only one Pacer runner reached as far as second base. Brandy Luke (Orlando, Fla./Indian River State College) retired all three batters she faced in the seventh.

Kaley King (Jacksonville, Fla./Trinity Christian Academy) broke a scoreless tie with an RBI-double in the fourth inning and later in the inning scored on Brittany Simmons’ (Ocala, Fla./Chattanooga State Tech CC) two-run single.

Chelsea Welch (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia HS) belted a two-run home run in Flagler’s three-run sixth to pout the game away.

Heather Hill (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Indian River CC) singled twice for the Saints.

Four different Pacers had singles. Toni Flessate (6-2) tossed seven innings and allowed eight hits, three earned runs and struck out seven. She also walked five and had two wild pitches.

In the second game, Kaycee Lisa’s (Seminole, Fla./Seminole HS) two-run home run in the top of the second wiped out a 1-0 Pacer lead and the Saints never relinquished the lead.

King added some insurance in the top of the third with a two-run homer to put Flagler ahead, 4-1.

USC Aiken scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third, but would not score again.

Lauren Ely (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs HS) added an RBI-double in the fourth and King hit an RBI-double in the top of the seventh. King finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI.

Luke (1-0) picked up her first win as a Saint. She tossed four innings of one-hit relief and fanned two. Luke induced six ground outs and four more fly outs. She spelled starter Kristen Chapman (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood HS) who lasted three innings, scattered five hits, allowed one earned run and struck out three.

Brandy Bossle singled twice and drove in a run for the Pacers. Kathleen Nichols (0-3) went the distance and surrendered six hits, five earned runs, walked six and struck out five.

Flagler hosts Palm Beach Atlantic University on Mar. 10 at 4 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader at Saints Field.

STARKVILLE, Miss. − Flagler College recruit Katie Enright (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills HS) was selected to the 2010 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Second-Team which was released Friday afternoon. Of the 48 honorees to the three teams, she is one of only two non-NCAA Division I signees and the lone Division II signee.
