No. 23 Flagler triumphs over No. 33 Grand Valley State, 8-1

Jennifer Saviano helped lead No. 23 Flagler to an 8-1 win over No. 33 Grand Valley State Tuesday night in Orlando.
ORLANDO, Fla. – No. 23 (ITA Division II) Flagler College rolled to an 8-1 win over No. 33 Grand Valley State University in a non-conference women’s tennis match Tuesday afternoon at Sanlando Park.

Flagler won its third match in a row and improved to 8-2 overall while Grand Valley State had its two-match win streak snapped and fell to 15-7.

The Saints took two-of-the-three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead early in the match. Veronica Figueroa (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek HS) and Jennifer Saviano (Davie, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) out-lasted Tara Hayes and Katelyn Schaffer at No. 2 doubles 9-8 (7-4). Rachel Gould (Toronto, Ontario/Vaughan Road Academy) and Chelsea Taylor (Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Prep) rolled to an 8-3 win over Rachel Rendina and Allison Fecko.

In singles play, Chelsi de Cuba (Fort Pierce, Fla./Vero Beach HS) snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-2 and 6-2 straight sets win over Hayes at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Lauren Pfeiffer (Fort Pierce, Fla./Florida Gulf Coast U.) also snapped three-match losing streak and defeated Schaffer 6-0 and 6-1. Figueroa rolled to a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Chelsea Johnston while Saviano downed Darylann Trout 2-6, 6-1 and 6-4. Taylor won her third straight singles match 6-3 and 6-1 over Rendina.

Flagler returns to Peach Belt Conference play on Friday (Mar. 12) at the University of Montevallo at 10 a.m.

JONESBORO, Ga. - The 22nd-ranked (ITA Division II Poll) Flagler College women's tennis team will face 13th-ranked Francis Marion University Friday (Apr. 16) at the Clayton County Tennis Center in Jonesboro, Ga., the site of the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Championships. Francis Marion is seeded fourth while Flagler is the fifth seed.
