Flagler wins inaugural Peach Belt Conference title

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. − The Flagler College women’s golf team won the inaugural Peach Belt Conference Championship Tuesday afternoon at Callaway Gardens (par 71; 5860 yards). The Saints will now wait for a conference call later on in the month to see if they advance to regional competition.

Flagler (660) won by just three strokes over Armstrong Atlantic State University (663). The University of Montevallo (666) finished in third place while UNC Pembroke (667) placed fourth. Columbus State University (737) and North Georgia College & State University (822) rounded out the field.

Emily Gibson of Montevallo took home medalist honors with a 12-over par 154 and held off two players who finished just two strokes behind.

Kaitlyn Edwards (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs HS) tied for fourth place with a 15-over 157. She shot an 8-over 79 today and recorded one birdie and 11 pars.

Elin Karlsson (Vanersborg, Sweden/Vaxjo Fria Gymnasium) tied Edwards for fourth place with a 157. She carded a four-over 75 today, which was the second-best score of the final round. Karlsson started out strong shooting a 3-under on the front-nine, but managed on the back side with five bogeys.

Kristie Feltner (St. Augustine, Fla./Middletown (Ohio) HS) made it a trio for Flagler in the top 10. She finished 10th overall with a 26-over 168. Feltner shot a 12-over 83 today. She birdied the ninth hole and went on to par the next four-out-of-five holes.

Melissa Marinan (Niceville, Fla./Niceville HS) tied for 19th with a 41-over 183. She shot a 24-over 95 today.

Rounding out Flagler’s scorers was Laura Martellino (Valrico, Fla./Durant HS) who tied Marinan for 19th place. She shaved three strokes off of yesterday’s tally and carded a 19-over 90. Martellino recorded seven pars on the day.

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Last Saturday (Oct. 15), Flagler College Director of Golf Santiago Cavanagh was honored by his alma mater, Lincoln Memorial University, by welcoming him in its Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2011 held at Tex Turner Arena. Cavanagh and five other Lincoln Memorial alums were so honored as par of its Homecoming Weekend festivities.
