Barnett adds 10 to 2011 roster

Head Coach Dave Barnett announced 10 newcomers to the 2011 baseball roster this afternoon.
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Flagler College head baseball coach Dave Barnett added 10 more student-athletes to his 2011 roster today (July 9). The newcomers are: Steven Delvalle (St. Augustine, Fla./University of West Florida); Cody Ewing (Crystal River, Fla./Crystal River HS), Evan Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Monmouth University), Brandon Haney (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park HS), Micah Kellogg (Lakewood, N.Y./Jamestown CC), Corey Kernan (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock Township HS), Colt Phillips (Fleming Island, Fla./Fleming Island HS), Frank Poerio (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton HS), Max Rusch (Fargo, N.D./Des Moines Area CC) and Tyler Ward (Rochester, N.Y./Alfred State College).

Delvalle comes to Flagler via the University of West Florida. He did not play at UWF after a great career at Nease High.

Ewing is a two-time all-conference outfielder at Crystal River High. A natural athlete, he also lettered in football.

Grandizio, a catcher, is a four-year letter winner in baseball at Bloomsburg (Pa.) High where he hit .475 and belted five home runs. He transfers to Flagler from NCAA Division I member, Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J.

Haney, a left-handed pitcher, was an all-county and an all-league selection at Kings Park High. He helped lead the team to the Suffolk County Class “A” title. Haney also tossed a no-hitter this past spring.

Kellogg is a right-handed pitcher who transfers to Flagler from Jamestown (N.Y.) Community College. He batted .363 with 140 hits, 95 runs scored, 22 doubles, eight triples, eight home runs and 87 runs batted in his career at JCC. Kellogg broke the school’s career hit record and set single-season records for hits (63), RBI (48) and home runs (8). He batted .414 this past spring and earned All-WNYAC honors. Kellogg was a two-time first-team All-CCAA selection at Southwestern High.

Kernan is an outfielder who helped lead Pequannock Township High to the NJAC title this spring and the New Jersey State title in 2009. He batted .350 as a senior and hit .410 as a junior.

Phillips is a catcher from nearby Fleming Island High. He batted .333 this past spring, and as a junior he helped lead the Golden Eagles to the District 5 title.

Poerio is third baseman from Hampton High in western Pennsylvania. He is a two-time All-WPIAL Class AAA Section 1 honoree.

Rusch is a right-handed pitcher who comes to Flagler from Des Moines (Iowa) Area Community College where his head coach was former Flagler assistant, Dan Fitzgerald. He posted a 5-2 record with an earned run average of 4.72 for the Bears. Rusch helped DMACC win its third consecutive Iowa Community College Athletic Conference title. He spent his freshman year at NAIA member Jamestown (N.D.) College. Rusch was a two-time all-state and all-conference selection at Fargo (N.D.) South High. He also tossed a no-hitter and helped lead Fargo South to the state final.

Ward is a right-handed pitcher who transfers to Flagler from Alfred (N.Y.) State College where he posted a 7-2 record and a 2.15 earned run average. He was also a four-time All-Greater Rochester selection while at Bishop Kearney High.

Flagler will open the 2011 season in February.

AIKEN, S.C. − Zack Stanton’s RBI single in the seventh inning proved to be the game-winning hit as Georgia Southwestern State University advanced to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship with a 5-2 win over Flagler College Sunday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
