Flagler releases golf schedules

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − The Flagler College golf schedules, for both men and women, are complete for the fall and near completion for the spring. Director of Golf Santiago Cavanagh may look to add a tournament in the spring for both teams.

The men open the fall season Sept. 6-7 at the Kiawah Island Invitational in South Carolina. The Saints finished 13th in last year’s tournament. Sept. 27-28, Flagler will host the second annual Flagler Invitational at the Palencia Club. The Saints finished second in the inaugural tournament.

Flagler starts October at the Cougar Invitational in Columbus, Ga. The tournament we be played on the 4th and 5th and will mark the first time since the fall 2007 season that the Saints played in the Cougar Invitational. The fall season concludes with the Queens Invitational which will be held Nov. 1-2 at nearby TPC Sawgrass. Flagler finished third in the tournament last year and Chris Bray (Hilliard, Fla./Hilliard HS) finished second, one shot back.

To open the spring season, Flagler will look to defend its Outback Steakhouse Intercollegiate crown, Feb. 7-8, at Pensacola, Fla. Joel Dahlenburg (St. Augustine, Fla./Bartram Trail HS) and Andrew Pressentin finished first and second, respectively. Feb. 27-March 1, Flagler will participate in the Golfweek Magazine Tournament in Orlando. Mar. 28-29, the Saints will play in the Bearcat Invitational, hosted by Peach Belt Conference member Lander University.

The Peach Belt Conference Tournament will be held in Savannah, Ga., at a date to be determined.

Flagler placed ninth in the conference tournament last season and qualified for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. The Saints concluded the season ranked No. 25 in the final Golf World/NIKE Division II Coaches Poll.

The women open the season Sept. 13-14 at the Queens Invitational which will be held at TPC Sawgrass. The Saints finished 10th at the tournament last year. Flagler will follow with the Bubba Wilson Invitational in Pensacola, Sept. 27-28. The Saint Leo Invitational is the next tournament the Saints will play in, Oct. 18-19. The fall season concludes with the eighth annual Flagler Fall Slam, which will be played Oct. 25-26 at the Marsh Creek Country Club.

The spring opens with the Newberry College Invitational Feb. 14-15 at Hilton Head Island, S.C. Feb. 7-8, the Saints will participate in the Pfeiffer Invitational and the regular season concludes with the J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate in Pinehurst, N.C., Mar. 21-22.

The conference tournament will be held in Savannah, Ga., at a date to be determined. Flagler is the defending conference champions.

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Last Saturday (Oct. 15), Flagler College Director of Golf Santiago Cavanagh was honored by his alma mater, Lincoln Memorial University, by welcoming him in its Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2011 held at Tex Turner Arena. Cavanagh and five other Lincoln Memorial alums were so honored as par of its Homecoming Weekend festivities.
